FORM FIVE 2010: FIRST ROUND OFFERS
After interviewing over 520 students during the past three weeks, we are pleased to announce that the following 224 students are offered a place in Form Five at Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School for 2010. We are pleased that we will have students in all ten Combinations offered.
These successful students are reminded that they must collect the Joining Instructions - only available from the school - as soon as possible and complete the required steps by March 24th; otherwise the offer is withdrawn and the place will be offered to another student in the Second Round of offers to be made on March 26th. In the Second Round of offers we expect to make at least 60 offers, some for boarding others for day - we are still looking for ways of increasing the number of boarding places especially for girls.
Those students offered a place in HGK, HGL, HKL and EGM must be aware that they are required to also take Divinity - it is not an option. Do not accept the place offered in HGK, HGL, HKL and EGM if you are not willing to study Divinity.
Day students are reminded that the taking of rooms near the school is not an option. They must reside with their parents or with another adult as guardian.
For those students seeking sponsorship through the school, you are reminded that it is school policy to put our sponsorship efforts into the students of Forms One to Four and not Forms Five and Six. Hence sponsorship will not be available from the school for Forms Five and Six.
It is pleasing to note the interest in the school from so many students and, while we are pleased to be able to offer a place to many, it is disappointing that we are not able to assist many others.
I thank all who have come for interview and wish you well in your further endeavours,
educational and otherwise.

NEWS 2009
January
Final Profession
The year started with a very significant event for the Christian Brothers when on January 3rd three brothers - Daniel P Lyimo, Amandi P Mboya and Francis D Nkwabi - made their Final Professions at Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School before a crowd of 300+. We congratulate these young men on their commitment and hope that they will have many more years of fruitful service; for this year Daniel and Francis will be working with the people around Yambio in southern Sudan while Amandi will pursue further studies at Iona University (an institute conducted by the Christian Brothers) near New York USA.
Classes Commence
Classes for A-Level resumed on Monday, January 5th for the final rush towards the Form Six National Examinations in early February. Form Five internal examinations will take place in late February. Enrolment for Form Five 2009 will take place during March following the publication of the results of the Form Four National Examinations.
Classes for O-Level resumed on Tuesday, January 13th with over 800 students arriving for classes. For the first time we have boarding students from all Forms with the introduction of boarding for Form Three and Four girls and boys. During the recent break some changes to the facilities will provide both additional security and additional spaces so that we now have boarding places for 630 students and hostel places for over 200 more students.
Application for places at all levels of O-Level means that all classes are now full with waiting lists for all levels. Similarly the demand for boarding and hostel places means that there are waiting lists for these places as well - mainly from students already attending the school.
The population of the school for the start of 2009 is just over 1 250 with 850+ in O-Level and 400+ in A-Level. With the new enrolments for A-Level to be taken by the end of March, there will probably be close to 1280 when the new A-Level classes commence.
Commencement Baraza and Form Six Graduation
Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School has been back in school since January 5th with the senior students about to finish their academic year in February - Form Six National Examinations take place from February 9th - while the O-Level students started a new academic year on January 13th. It has been a busy opening to the year and all classes are full with many enquiries still being received - currently there are over 1250 students and about 90 staff covering all aspects of school life!
Undoubtedly the highlight of the year so far was last Wednesday's Opening Baraza when we prayed for a blessing on our new year, welcomed the new students and staff, especially the Form Ones and then graduated the Form Six students. Our ‘mgeni rasmi' for the occasion was the District Leader, Br Gerard Ellul, who inspired the graduates with his wisdom shared with them in Kiswahili, Kimaasai and English! Our second group to graduate from the very new A-Level section of the school consisted of 166 students studying across eight curriculum combinations including arts, social sciences and the sciences.
Following the formal part of the day, the graduates gathered with families and friends to celebrate this significant stage in their life's journey -we are hopeful that many will proceed to further study at University or College.
February - March
An Historic Meeting
On Tuesday February 10th a significant event for the East Africa District took place - significant members of the three main Christian Brothers education ministries met at Namanga for several hours. After travelling for three hours (from Nairobi) or two hours (from Arusha) 25 members of the staffs of Reuben Centre (Mukuru, Nairobi), Br Beausang Education Centre (Embulbul Nairobi) and Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary/High School (Engosiu Arusha) met to discuss what made their ministries "Edmund Rice ministries".
The meeting was led by Wayne Tinsey, Michael Elphik and Br Bill Wilding who were visiting from Australia and covered such themes as Introducing Our Ministry, Identifying Edmund Rice Characteristics in our Ministries, Understanding Ecological Footprints and Africa's Contribution and Where To From Here? The value in the meeting was not so much what was taught but what was learned by all including our presenters. After about four hours of activity and discussion the return journey was made by all but with an added sense that we are part of a larger ministry!
Maybe this was a small start for the ‘other EREA' - Edmund Rice Education Africa!!??
Form Four Results
On the weekend of February 7th and 8th of February, Form Four results - or the results of the (CSEE) Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations - were published.
At Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School we were pleased to note the following statistics:
Division One 9
Division Two 21
Division Three 51
Division Four 116
Many of our students are now qualified for Form Five studies while a few may chose to resit a few subjects so as to better qualify for A-Level studies.
The Following nine students are to be congratulated on obtaining Division One (with points):
Catherine L Sangu 16
Amon D Nduuni 16
Edson L Bulengela 14
Hamisi R Sembe 16

Ramadhani I Munna
Straton S Mrosso
Wilhad E Maheta
These results followed the pleasing results of From Two earlier in the year and we now await the results of Form Six who are about to finish their ACSEE (Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations).
A-Level Enrolment
The new intake of students for Form Five at A-Level will start on March 30th - the next few weeks, from Monday February 23rd until March 11th, will see many hopefuls undergo the enrolment process based primarily upon two things, the results of Form Four studies and the Enrolment Interview. Further details and Forms are available elsewhere on this website under Enrolment and Enrolment Forms.
A small number of offers of places in Form Six were made initially and these have basically completed the class lists for each of the eight Combinations.
For Form Five three rounds of offers were made - including publication on the website. Eventually all Combinations other than ECA - being offered for the first time - were filled to capacity.
While the lists were previously published on this part of the website, they have now been removed for convenience and to save space and time in maintaining the site with information relevant to current operations.
Information regarding enrolment is found elsewhere on this website.
The total A-Level enrolment is approximately 490 with 220 in Form Six and 270 in Form Five.
April
Easter Conference
Following the six week enrolment period for Form five students, A-Level students began classes after an initial orientation of one day. Both A- and O-Level students were together for just one week bfore the younger students left for their Easter break.
They were replaced at the school by young people from many schools around Arusha coming for the ‘Easter Conference' - four days of reflection and celebration centred on the principal events of the Christian celebration of Easter. Though 600 or so were expected, estimates placed the number at close to a thousand. Despite cool and occasional rainy weather, the spirits of the young people were high as they entered wholeheartedly into the reflections and celebrations. A-Lev el classes continued on some of the days but the students were also able to join in the liturgical celebrations.
Shamba Dress
Following the Easter break, the O-Level students returned to join the A-Level students in ‘shamba dress' as the alternative to the school uniform for Boarding and Hostel students, For A-level students, it is black skirt for girls and black trousers for boys with a grey top, preferably the school T-shirt. For O-Level student, it is khaki skirt or trousers with the House colour top. Students have adapted quickly to the new scheme and it has certainly lightened the cases from carrying various casual clothing as in the past.
Houses Named
Last year the A-Level students, when asked to find names for their four Houses, decided upon aspects particular to Tanzania, namely the National Parks and the main result of mining. So the Houses are named
Kilimanjaro - Red
Tanzanite One - Blue
Mikumi - Green
Serengeti - Gold.
With the formation of the houses for O=Level, another set of names was needed and this time the challenge was to recognise prominent figures in African history. The result is that the Houses are named
Nyerere - Red
Nkrumah - Blue
Mandela - Green
Lumumba - Gold.
May
Form Six Results
On May 1st, the results of the Form Six examinations (or ACSEE) became public and we were pleased to note the following:
Division I 21
Division II 35
Division III 68
Division IV 27
It was pleasing to particularly note the increase from 7 to 21 in Division One winners in this just our second year of A-Level results. But there were also 13 students who failed and disappointingly all except one were from the science area - it was our first year of offering some of the Science Combinations but the results were below our expectations. This has certainly caused administration, staff and students to reflect upon what is needed to ensure that the Science Combinations have success similar to the Humanities and Commerce areas.
On the other hand, we were pleased to note that we were highly ranked in Geography, English Language and Economics (noting that we are being compared with elite Government schools and highly selective private schools) and the staff have accepted the challenge of aiming for all subjects to be similarly rated over the next couple of years. The quality of our enrolment suggests that this should be possible.
We congratulate the following students who were awarded Division One:
Ester Kileo
Jesca Tembo
Joyce Julius
Lilian Joel
Wtness Ahadi
Zawadi Msangi
Adam Adam
Dickson Johnson
Edgar Ngango
Edward Charles
Eliphas Sambeke
Fidelis Joseph
Goodluck Nelson
Hockence Mlacha
Idd Juma

Lawrence Raphaely

Edmund Rice Feast Day Celebration
The Form Six results were a good start to the celebrations for Edmund Rice Feast day - this year there were a number of changes that made the day a highlight for the year so far, something that it has always been.
The day started with the National anthem and the School Song before a liturgy that marked the story of Edmund Rice and its significance for this school named in his honour.
Then followed recognition of the students who participated in the Edmund Rice Awards Club for the past year - these students have learnt more about Edmund while putting the service of others into practice through visits to those with disadvantage including some in local orphanages.
The theme of recognition was followed by recognition of staff who have given loyal service to the school. While this will become an annual event, this year saw certificates awarded to those who have given five, ten fifteen or twenty years on the staff of the school - 28 in all. Students were very generous in their applause and staff recognised seemed very pleased with the reception they received. Further recognition will come at a staff function later in the year.
The morning session finished with the presentation by Livingston Barnabas, a current Form Six student, of a model of the school property - made in his own time with the occasional help of other students. It will stand in the entrance to the Administration Wing.
The afternoon session took another three hours and was highlighted by presentations from each of the O- and A-Level Houses - giving plenty of opportunity for the students to demonstrate their individual and collective talents. Audience interest was high throughout the eight presentations and occasional interludes from the school choir.
The final event of the day saw presentations made to the Division One winners in the Form Six examinations - 16 of the 21 were able to be present despite the short time between announcement of results and the celebrations.
Reflection Days
The week after the celebration of the Feast Day of Edmund Rice saw four Reflection Days for the Form Five students - taken two Combinations at a time. Such days have also been held during the term for each class in Forms Two, Three and Four and are an innovation not previously planned at the school. The planning has been done by two volunteers - Michelle Prest and Trish Hevern (and recently Stuart O'Brien) using material from their previous experience and other ideas from various sources.
Themes for the days have varied but all are directed at enabling students to recognise the importance of being aware of themselves and others in the world in which they live. The recent Form Five days provided an opportunity to introduce these students, new to the school, to Edmund Rice and his significance for the school and those who participate in it.
One student, in her fifth year at the school, indicated that the day was very welcome "It was good to give time to recognising the importance of God in our lives while learning of how others have responded to the various challenges during their lives."
End of Term for O-Level
The final two weeks of May correspond to the final two weeks of the term. So examinations are the common element starting on May 18th with the first of the Form Four Mock examinations. Wednesday, May 20th is the start of the Archdiocesan Form Two Mock examinations and the Form One and Three internal examinations will take place in the final week.
Associated with the examinations is the introduction of a revamped Report Form - bilingual in both Kiswahili and English and in a form aimed at simplifying the writing processes for teachers.
After the O-Level finishes classes on May 29th, A-Level will have a further week of examinations before the school breaks for a four week break from June 5th until July 6th.
June - July
With June and early July being holiday time, there was little staff and student activity; however we were able to continue development of our facilities. An additional silo (ie formerly a container), additional plate-washing areas, boarding house renovations, etc are all signs that there is an ongoing development of structurs to support the increasing enrolment - some 1350+ at the start of this term.
There were also a number of staff changes, the most significant being the departure of Br Paul Follas after almost twelve years of financial and facility development. He had made a huge contribution - with Br Frank O'Shea - to the development of the school particularly in the area of sustainability and facility provision. He will be taking a break in New Zealand before returning to Africa to work for the Christian Brothers as Business Manager being based in Lusaka, Zambia.
School resumed after the Saba Saba holiday with a full enrolment - there have been almost no additions to the student numbers with all year levels being full. Staff numbers, teacher wise, have increased and we are fortunate to have staff for all of our disciplines.
The return to school was marked by visits from three groups - senior educators from Australia, students from near Philadelphia USA and the members of the Karibu 2009 Immersion Programme. The latter group spent a day at the school, walked home with some of our Maasai students and were entertained to a meal prepared by the Form Three and Four home economics students and a presentation from the senior choir.
Another innovation after the break has been the introduction of Sunday morning liturgies for the various Christian groups. After starting with Kiswahili, they have now moved to being said in English, part of a plan that has seen an increased emphasis on the ise of English within all activities.
July also saw a significant change in the volunteer personnel - though the numbers have remained constant, the people have changed; we are still able to staff strongly the Special Programme for Form One students and also support teachers of the various academic classes. The current group of volunteers has a good international mix - they come from Ireland, England, India (via Dubai), Australia and New Zealand.
August
August has seen a concentration on academics as the Form Sixes prepare for their Mock Examinations from mid-August and other Forms are also in assessment mode.
The finals of the sports programme have also been held. The football team made the final eight but were unable to progress to the semi-final stage in a competition where the standard is always improving. The netball team did progress to the finals stage and eventually finished third - a very good effort from a young side.
With end of the interschool sport, intraschool sport is now under way with interhouse competition at each year level. Other competitions are also under way including an interhouse music contest - house choir in both Kiswahili and English as well as a representative group/band. Results have also been announced for the academic performances at each year level in O-Level - the results were close and could easily have been different with improved efforts by students in any of the Houses.
September
During September, mid-term breaks occurred for both A- and O-Level students and staff and by the end of the month all had returned for the final run to the end of the year.
While the earlier part of the month was given over to assessment exercises, the results of the assessments came in the latter part of the month. Form Six Mock Examination results were good and encouraging but with a reminder that such results are not quite what happens in the Final Examinations - there is no room for over-confidence and complacency. Similarly the results of the Form Two Mock Examinations were pleasing in that they showed an improvement on those from earlier in the year and the school maintained its high standing amongst the schools of the zone. House results are published for each Form level with each House having its share of success.
House netball and football competitions in O-Level took place with much enthusiasm and interest with the finals to take place in early October. A-Level competitions will take place during October and early November.
A small highlight for the A-Level boarders was the introduction to them of a ‘Trivia Night' with much energy and los of fun thanks to the preparations by two of our volunteers, Abhiroop and Rashi Sen from India.
The end of the month brought graduation season with both Dini and School graduation occurring within a week of each other. The highlight of the Catholic Dini Graduation was the inclusion of one Baptism, four First Communions and nineteen Confirmations, a reminder to all present of the significance of the sacramental life for our spirituality.
At the School Graduation, we graduated 206 Form Fours, wished them well for their forthcoming examinations and thanked them for their contribution to school life over the past four years. They will be finished examinations by October 24th but not start Form Five until after Easter next year - a break of almost six months!
October
October has started the move towards the end of the academic year as well as the beginning of the 2010 academic year for O-Level students.
Form Four students have had their final examinations stretched out over a period of almost three weeks and will now have to wait until mid- to late February before their results are known and they can plan for A-Level/Form Five and Six which will begin in early April, a break of almost six months!
Forms One, Two and Three have been consulted on their subject choices for next year and classes are well into the planning stage - as well as the organisation of staff!
Late in the month, the first session of Entrance Interviews for Form One 2010 has taken place with 660 students attempting to seek a place - examination and correction were completed on the one day and we are now able to announce the successful students:
FORM ONE 2010 - OCTOBER OFFERS
On Saturday October 24th 660 students sat for the Entrance Interview for Form One at Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School. We thank all for their interest and cooperation in our process.
At this time we are offering places to over 230 students with an expectation that some might not wish to accept the place offered.
Students whose names appear below are required to collect a set of Joining Instructions from the main office of the school and to complete the requirements as listed.
All offers not accepted by the stated date - December 4th - will be withdrawn as from December 5th and then offered to students who sit for the Entrance Interview on January 6th.
Students who sat on last Saturday and have not been offered a place are more than welcome to sit again in January provided they again complete the Application Form.
We also publish a copy of the scores attained by each student on Saturday but in the interests of privacy have done so by publishing the Examination Number and the final score - out of 100. Students wishing to be reminded of their Examination Number may ask at the main office but can only do so for themselves - they may not ask about another student without written permission.
We thank all who have expressed an interest in being a member of the school and wish all every success in your further education.

November - December
November is the final month of the school year for O-Level students and much of it was taken up in assessment procedures - examinations and report writing.
Early in the month the Form Two students sat for their National Examinations and must now wait until January for their results which are very important as the school places great importance on students maintaining academic progress particularly from those who are in accommodation - both boarding and hostel. While most are given an indication of their status for 2010, some have to wait until the results are published to see if they continue in school and/or in accommodation.
The Form Three and Form One students had their internal examinations towards the end of the month but had a much shorter wait as they got their results a week after the completion of the examinations - this was achieved through the dedicated work of the teachers in correction and report writing.
The report forms have also undergone some reformatting to enable a clear picture of progress to emerge as well as to inform parents and students of the other aspects of personal development at the school - character, cooperation, industry and involvement - as well as the arrangements for next year with respect to class (including options) and accommodation. Very few of these students have considered a change of school and thus the number of places available at Forms Two, Three and Four for 2010 is very small though there will be a significant number of parents and students who will seek such places.
While the O-Level - ie Forms One to Four - have been bringing their academic year to a close, the A-Level students - ie Forms Five and Six - have been continuing with their study in preparation for final examinations in February. Some were keen enough to stay on at school for a couple of weeks to avail of the study conditions, some tuition and co-interest with the other students. A-Level boys were able to hold a large part of the inter-House football competition but the outdoor conditions were not suitable for the girls to play their netball.
Most of the competitions for the Rice Shield at O-Level have been completed with both the Form Three and Form One academic results now known: in Form Three Lumuba were top with 103 points closely followed by Nyerere (101), Mandela (100) and Nkrumah (96) while in Form One Mandela were top with 124 points followed by Nyerere (123), Nkrumah (122) and Lumumba (121). With only the Form Two results to be decided, the competition will be decided by the Form Two results as Nyerere and Mandela are equal on 61 points with Lumumba on 56 and Nkrumah on 46.
December was a relatively quiet month with students and staff absent from the 4th of the month. However, we were able to do quite a good bit of maintenance, one highlight being the painting of the Form Two, Three and Four classrooms and O-Level staff room while further renovations were made to add more accommodation for boarders with the School House converted to take 28 more girls and some 36 beds being made to cater for both the additional girls and some extra boys all at O-Level.
By the end of December some 120 students from the October Entrance Intervews had accepted places in Form One for 2010
Another highlight was the visit of Br Frank O'Shea the previous principal - he took the opportunity for a break from his ministry in Sudan to catch up with friends from his time in Arusha. The month ended with the brothers' community journeying to Nairobi to join the other brothers of East Africa - 52 in all were in attendance - in a three day reflection and discussion gathering.
Now for 2010!!
